Access 2000 2013 vertical lines

I imported an Access 2000 Contacts file into Access 2013. Everything looks OK with one very important exception: Two columns (Contact Type and Contact Application) allow drop down selection. The Contact Type column is fine. The problem with the Contact Application columns is that, when using the drop down feature, it now shows mysterious vertical lines that vertically blanc out a part of the drop-down selections, making only the beginning readable.
