Why can't I use split screen with my Microsoft and internet??

I don't understand why I could use the split screen with Microsoft Windows open before, and cannot now. It just sudden'y stopped working. No matter What I try it won't allow me to view both the internet and what I am typing in Microsoft windows. Am I doing something wrong?

I have Windows 8, and a ASUS computer with Core i 5 from intel.
